Born in Armenia he studied at the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow going on to join the Novaya Opera and then the Bolshoi Theatre as bass soloist. He won second prize in the Francisco Viñas International singing competition, first prize in the Elena Obraztsova Competion and 3rd prize in the Queen Sonia International Music Competition, leading to the start of his international career and appearances in many important theatres throughout the world.
