Christophoros Stamboglis was born and educated in Athens. He started his musical education by studying cello and later singing at the Athens Conservatory. In 1983 he won the Maria Callas Scholarship that brought him to London to study under Vera Rozsa at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After graduating he spent a year in New York, studying privately with A. Boyajian. He also participated in master classes given by Sena Jurinac and Sherrill Milnes at the Royal Festival Hall in London. In 1994 he met the great Greek baritone Kostas Paskalis with whom he studied vocal technique until his sudden death in February 2007.
He made his debut in 1987 while still a student at the GSMD, singing Figaro LE NOZZE DI FIGARO with Pimlico Opera in London. He remained with this company for 2 more years, singing Don Alfonso COSI FAN TUTTE and Leporello DON GIOVANNI. In 1989 he made his Athens debut singing Leporello DON GIOVANNI, alongside Kostas Paskalis as the Don, for Greek National Opera and became a member of the ensemble. With the Company he sang many major bass parts including Basilio IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLA, Silva ERNANI, Fiesco SIMONE BOCCANEGRA, Maometto II L'ASSEDIO DI CORINTO, Enrico VIII ANNA BOLENA and the title role of ATTILA.
In 1991 he participated in the opening concert of the Athens State Orchestra at the Megaron, Athens. Since then he has appeared at the Megaron in more than 25 productions including in many operas and concerts of sacred music. Conductors and singers with whom he has worked are Weikert, Plasson, Bonynge, Viotti, Kuhn, Pizzi, Baltsa, Bumbry, Cura, Meritt, and Anderson.
In 1996 he joined the Accademia Rossiniana where he studied interpretation of Rossini operas under Maestro Alberto Zedda, leading to many appearances in Italian theatres singing the bass coloratura repertory, such as Lord Sydney IL VIAGGIO A REIMS and Alidoro LA CENERENTOLA as well as buffo roles including Don Magnifico CENERENTOLA, DON PASQUALE and SOCRATE IMMAGINARIO.
In 2002 he joined the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein where he stayed for 5 seasons, singing Oroveso NORMA, Alidoro CENERENTOLA, Mustafa L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI, the title role of DON PASQUALE, Leporello DON GIOVANNI, Don Alfonso COSI FAN TUTTE, Raimondo LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, Sparafucile RIGOLETTO, Crespel LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN, Don Magnifico CENERENTOLA and Claudius HAMLET.
In 2006 he sung his first Filippo II DON CARLO at the Megaron's new Alexandra Trianti Hall, where the 1965 Visconti production was revived.
He has also sung many concerts all over the world; his repertory containing more than 70 roles and he has recorded for LYRA, EMI Classics, Bongiovanni Records and the Fondazione Rossini.
