Elena Popovskaya was born in Moscow and graduated in composition and musicology from the Gnessins Music College in Moscow, going on to study singing at the Vocal Department of the Moscow State Conservatoire under Professor Kadinskaya. She was awarded a special prize in the Concour International de Chant in Toulouse. On completing her studies, Elena Popovskaya joined the Moscow Chamber Opera where she worked under Boris Pokrovsky and later became a member of the Moscow Novaya Opera where she is now principal soprano. With this company she tours both throughout Russia and abroad.
Recently she made a most successful debut as Renata in Prokofiev's THE FIERY ANGEL for Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, and sang the title role of TURANDOT and Liza THE QUEEN OF SPADES at the Latvian National Opera. She sang soprano solo in Shostakovich's SYMPHONY NO. 14 at the Belgrade Festival and stepped in at very short notice to sing TURANDOT at Torre del Lago. She appeared as Liza THE QUEEN OF SPADES at the Bolshoi Opera under Mikhail Pletnev. At Novaya Opera she appeared as Ortrud in their production of LOHENGRIN under Jan Latham-Koenig and most recently sang the title role of TOSCA with the Kazan Opera.
