Bass-Baritone Johannes von Duisburg, born in Dresden 1967, started his vocal training whilst at school.
Aged 20, he made his debut as a soloist at .the Stadttheater Brandenburg. After moving to former West-Berlin, he studied and took his degree at the Universität der Künste. Throughout these studies, he joined the master class of Kammersänger Prof. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau whilst continuing to study with his regular voice teacher, Kammersänger Peter Gougaloff.
1989 he won the first price at the Young Artists Competition sponsored by the Philip Morris Company; in 1992 the second price in the Opera Singers Competition of Staatsoper Hannover; in 1995 the O.E.Hasse Award for outstanding stage-performers.
In 1991, he accepted a contract at the Mecklenburgische Staatstheater, Schwerin and made his role-debuts as Don Pizarro FIDELIO and as the world`s youngest FLIEGENDER HOLLÄNER. Since 1992, he has worked as a freelance singer throughout the world, with guest contracts at theatres such as the opera houses of Geneva, Lisbon, Florence, Cagliari, Napoli, Rome (Accademia di Santa Cecilia and Teatro dell`Opera), Bologna, Moscow, Prague, Strasbourg and the Festivals of Wexford and Bregenz. Roles he performed include Jochanaan SALOME, Amonasro AIDA, Kaspar FREISCHÜTZ, Escamillo CARMEN, Scarpia TOSCA and Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE.
In November 2001 he sang Amonasro AIDA in Tokyo with José Cura as Radames. During the 2002/03 season, he performed Telramund LOHENGRIN at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna with Maestro Daniele Gatti, as well as FLIEGENDER HOLLÄNDER at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.
From 2003/04 he made his debuts as Wanderer SIEGFRIED at the Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona under Bertrand de Billy in a production by Harry Kupfer.
From 2004/05 there followed the role-debut of Wotan WALKÜRE at Breslau`s "Jahrhunderthalle" in a production by Hans-Peter Lehmann. Later he repeated the role of FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at Teatro dell`Opera di Roma and Telramund LOHENGRIN at TeatroVerdi Trieste. At the Oper-Köln he sang Don Pizarro FIDELIO and in July Amonasro in a new production of AIDA at the Savonlinna Opera Festival with Michele Crider in the title role.
From 2006/07: he appeared in a new production of SALOME Lithuanian National Opera Vilnius (directed by David Alden), LOHENGRIN in Aachen and made his role-debut as Claggart BILLY BUDD at the Operahouse Köln. He also sang Wotan WALKÜRE at Bangkog Opera, and DEAD MAN WALKING at Theater an der Wien.

Future plans include: Wotan DIE WALKÜRE at the Ravenna Festival to be repeated later in Bangkok and his debut at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon in LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN and Scarpia TOSCA.
