Johannes von Duisburg
Bass-Baritone Johannes von Duisburg, born in Dresden, started his vocal training whilst at school. Aged 20, he made his debut as a soloist at the "Stadttheater Brandenburg". Afterwards he moved to former West Berlin, where he studied and completed his degree at the Universität der Künste. During this time, he joined the master class of Kammersänger Prof. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau whilst studying singing with Kammersänger Peter Gougaloff. In 1989 he was awarded first price in the Young Artists Competition sponsored by the Philip Morris Company, in 1992 the second price in the Opera Singers Competition at Staatsoper Hannover, in 1995 he won the O.E.Hasse Award for outstanding stage performers. In 1991, he accepted a contract at the Mecklenburgische Staatstheater Schwerin and made his role debuts as Don Pizarro FIDELIO and as the world's youngest FLIEGENDER HOLLÄNDER. Since 1992, he has worked as a freelance singer at important theatres all over the world, including Geneva, Lisbon, Florence, Cagliari, Napoli, Rome (Accademia di Santa Cecilia and Teatro dell`Opera), Bologna, Moscow, Prague, Strasbourg and the Festivals of Wexford and Bregenz. Roles he has performed include Jochanaan SALOME, Amonasro AIDA, Kaspar DER FREISCHÜTZ, Escamillo CARMEN, Scarpia TOSCA and Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. In November 2001 he sang Amonasro AIDA in Tokyo alongside José Cura as Radames.
During the 2002/03 season, he performed Telramund LOHENGRIN at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna under Daniele Gatti as well as DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.
2003/04 he made his debuts as Wanderer SIEGFRIED at the Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona under Bertrand de Billy in a production by Harry Kupfer.
2004/05 he made his role debut as Wotan DIE WALKÜRE at Breslau`s Jahrhunderthalle in a production by Hans-Peter Lehmann. Later he repeated the role of DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at Teatro dell`Opera di Roma and Telramund LOHENGRIN at TeatroVerdi di Trieste. At the Oper Köln he sang Don Pizarro FIDELIO and in July Amonasro in a new production of AIDA at the Savonlinna-Opera Festival with Michele Crider in the title role.
2006/07: Jochanaan in a new production of SALOME at the Lithuanian National Opera Vilnius, directed by David Alden, Telramund LOHENGRIN in Aachen, he made his role debut as John Claggart BILLY BUDD directed by Willy Decker at the Oper Köln, Jesus in Bach's ST.JOHN PASSION directed by Robert Wilson in Vilnius and Wotan DIE WALKÜRE at the Festivals of Ravenna and Ravello,
2007/08: DEAD MAN WALKING directed by Nicolaus Lehnhoff at Theater an der Wien, Jochanaan SALOME and Wotan DIE WALKÜRE, his debut as Lindorf/Coppéliu/Dr.Miracle and Dapertutto in a new production of LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN and Scarpia TOSCA at the Teatro National de Sao Carlos Lisboa.
2008-10 DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER in Bergen directed by Francesca Zambello, Jochanaan SALOME at The Israeli Opera, John Claggart BILLY BUDD at Teatro Abao Bilbao, his highly praised role debut as Hans Sachs DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG for the 100.aniversary of Theater Hildesheim directed by Hans-Peter Lehmann for which he received great critical acclaim.
2010/11 Wotan DIE WALKÜRE National Opera Vilnius, Don Pizarro FIDELIO at Opernfestspiele Heideheim, Hans Sachs DIE MEISTERSINGER at Landestheater Linz, Jochanaan SALOME at Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Wotan DIE WALKÜRE Vilnius, Trinity Moses RISE AND FALL OF THE CITY OF MAHAGONNY at The Israeli Opera, DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at TeatroWielki Warsaw directed by Mariusz Trelinski and conducted by Rani Calderon.
2012/13: Amonasro AIDA at the Royal Opera Muscat, Oman alongside Lucrecia Garcia as Aida directed by Roberto Laganà Manoli and conducted by Patrick Fournillier, John Claggart BILLY BUDD at Mikhailovsky Theater St.Petersburg in the first performance ever of the opera in Russia, conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov and directed by Willy Decker. DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at Teatro Wielki Warszawa, conducted by Andreiy Yurkevych and directed by Mariusz Trelinski, a new production of DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at Mikhailovsky Theater St.Petersburg, conducted by Vasily Petrenko and directed by Vera Nemirova.
