Born in Russia, she first began her career as an actress. As a member of the Baryshnikov Arts Centre, she appeared at the Lincoln Centre, The Broad Stage Santa Monica, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the Theatre National de Chaillot Paris, the Suzanne Dellal Center Tel Aviv, the Spoleto Festival Italy and the Noorderzon Festival, Groningen. She also performed the role of Titania A Midsummer Nightís Dream at the World Shakespeare Festival, Stratford-upon-Avon, with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Laboratory of Dmitriy Krymov. This production won the Grand-Prix at the Edinburgh International Festival. She then decided to change from acting to singing and made her Russian debut as Venus Tannhäuser in the Novosibirsk State Opera Theatre. Taking part in the International Tchaikovsky Competition led to her being invited to take up a place in the Wales International Academy of Voice (WIAV) where she completed her Masters degree. In May 2016 she made her UK debut in the Royal Festival Hall singing the mezzo-soprano solo in Verdi's Messa da Requiem and later that same year appeared as Zitta Gianni Schicchi with Les Azuriales Opera. She also gave two solo recitals at the Wissembourge International Music Festival in France, accompanied by the well-known Russian pianist Nikita Mndoyanc. This summer she sings the challenging role of Ulrica Un Ballo in Maschera with West Green Opera.

Maria Gulik is also a revelation as Madame Arvidson, revealing a deep mezzo-soprano and projecting a strong mysterious allure. It is interesting how her look turns to one of knowing contempt when Gustavus dismisses her prophecy as mad or a joke, and then sorrow as she sees how he really does not grasp the danger.
