Winner of the Viotti International Competition for outstanding Bel Canto technique, Mikhail Svetlov joined the Bolshoi Theatre as a principle soloist where he remained for ten years. He also toured with the Bolshoi Theatre Company, appearing with them at the Metropolitan Opera, at Teatro alla Scala and the Royal Albert Hall. After appearing at the Wexford Festival his international career expanded. He appeared at the Salzburg Festival in the role of Ferrando IL TROVATORE, sang Zaccaria NABUCCO for the premiere of the Bregenz Festspiele. He appeared as Sparafucile RIGOLETTO at the Hamburgische Staatsoper and as DON GIOVANNI at the Gstaad Festival under Yehudi Menuhin. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Bayerische Staatsoper he appeared as the Grand Inquisitor DON CARLO, and sang Zaccaria NABUCCO for both the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova and the Arena di Verona. He appeared at the Barbican Centre with the London Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich's SYMPHONY No. 14 under Mstislav Rostropovich.
Mikail Svetlov appears frequently in the USA and Canada. Companies include Houston Grand Opera where he appeared as Mephistopheles FAUST. He has sung Don Basilio IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, Dikoy KATYA KABANOVA and Sparafucile RIGOLETTO for Opéra de Montreal. He has appeared at Florida Grand Opera in the title role of Boris and Varlaam BORIS GODOUNOV, Prince Gremin YEVGENI ONYEGIN and as Dikoy KATYA KABANOVA. At the New York City Opera he has sung the title role of ATTILA, Don Basilio IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, Il Commendatore DON GIOVANNI, Colline LA BOHEME, Banquo MACBETH and Rosenkranz MATHIS DER MALER in the United States premiere of the work.
Most recently he sang with the Opera de Bellas Artes Mexico, appearing as Fafner DAS RHEINGOLD, Mephistopheles FAUST, Banquo MACBETH, Dulcamara L'ELISIR D'AMORE, Walter LUISA MILLER, Ramfis AIDA. Other appearances include Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE for Opera Carolina, Ramfis AIDA for Opera Columbus, and Osmin DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL with the Camerata Orchestra. He has just made his role debut as Osmin DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL for Atlanta Opera. He also appeared at the Gars am Kamp-Open Air Festival as Zaccaria NABUCCO and made his debut with New Zealand Opera as Méphistophélès FAUST. At Opera Holland Park in London, he appeared as Archibaldo L'AMORE DEI TRE RE.
Future plans include, Osmin DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL for Opera de Bellas Artes, Florida Grand Opera, Atlanta Opera and the Camerata Orchestra. He will sing the role of Varlaam BORIS GODOUNOV at San Diego Opera, will return to Opera Carolina for more performances of Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE and to Columbus for Ramfis AIDA and will return to San Diego Opera for Varlaam BORIS GODOUNOV and has been invited back to New Zealand to give a solo recital.
