A native of Ukraine, Canadian baritone Sergei Stilmachenko studied opera in Kharkhov, New York and Toronto, winning a number of competitions including, the First Prize of the Concours International de Chant de Marmande in France. With Kharkov National Opera Ukraine he sang Morales CARMEN and Silvio I PAGLIACCI, before settling in Canada where he appeared with Montreal Opera, singing Yamadori MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Dandini LA CENERENTOLA and Belcore L'ELISIR D'AMORE. Other roles performed in Canada include the title role of Figaro IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA at the Oxford Festival, Haly L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI with Opéra de Québec and Masetto DON GIOVANNI with Vancouver Opera.

He moved to France where he participated in the Jeunes Voix du Rhin programme of the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, performing the roles of Tarquinius THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA, Peter HANSEL AND GRETEL and Dancairo CARMEN. He then joined the Centre de Formation Lyrique of the Opéra National de Paris with which he sang Rabastens POMME D'API and the title role of GIANNI SCHICCHI. Since then he has appeared regularly with Opéra National de Paris where his roles include First Mate BILLY BUDD, Fiorello IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, Premier Commissaire DIALOGUS DES CARMELITES, Sourine PIKOVAYA DAMA and Hajny RUSALKA. He has combined these with covering the roles of Marcello LA BOHEME, Haushofmeister DER ZWERG, Papageno DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Il Conte LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and the title roles of K by Manoury and GUILLAUME TELL.

Most recently he made his debut with Opéra de Montpellier as Figaro IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, sang Schaunard LA BOHEME with Opéra de Chambre de France, appeared as Malatesta DON PASQUALE with Nuits Le Bourget, appeared as Danilo DIE LUSTIGE WITWE at the Opéra Comique in Paris, returned to the Bastille to sing Marullo RIGOLETTO and appeared as The Doctor GIANNI SCHICCHI for Opéra du Capitole de Toulouse. He also made his very successful role debut as Ford FALSTAFF for Grand Théâtre Limoges and repeated the role at Opéra de Reims. He returned to Opéra National de Paris for Herman LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN and sang Figaro IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA in the French Summer Festival Opéra in Château.

Conductors with whom he has worked include Alexandre Vedernikov, Kent Nagano, James Conlon, Jiri Belohlavek, Marcello Viotti, Pinchas Steinberg, Stéphane Deneuve, Bruno Campanella and Jesus Lopez-Cobos and among the director with whom he has worked are Robert Carsen, Jérôme Savar;y, Colline Serreau, Francesca Zambello and Laurent Pelly.

Future plans include Schaunard LA BOHEME for Opéra d'Avignon, the Foreman JENUFA at Opéra Municipal de Toulon.

Recently Sergei Stilmachenko was awarded 2nd prize in the Russian International Singing Competition Amber Nightingale.
